About

Why this exists

Most people know roughly how long they will live. Almost nobody knows how much of that time is actually theirs.

Sleep takes a third of it. Work takes another large piece, and the road to work takes more. The phone takes a share most people would rather not measure. What is left — the hours that are genuinely yours, awake and free — is a much smaller number than anyone expects.

This site works out that number in about forty seconds.

Then it does the part that matters more. It takes one person you do not see enough, and works out how many hours you have left with them. Not how many years you will both be alive — how many hours you will actually spend together, given how you both really live.

For most people the two numbers sit uncomfortably close: the phone gets several times more of their life than the person they miss most.

What it is not

It is not a prediction. Nobody can tell you when you will die. These are population averages from published life tables, applied to the answers you give. Your own life will differ.

It is not a health product. There is no advice here, no plan to follow, nothing to buy.

It is not something you need an account for. There is no login, no profile, and nothing to install.

What we want from you

Forty seconds, and — if the number means something to you — that you send it to the person it is about.

That is the whole business model for now. If enough people send it, this becomes something bigger. If they do not, it stays a page that made a few thousand people call their mother.
